A Day After shoot with Fred and Jen at Chrissy Beach.

What is a "Day After" shoot? It's when you love to have photos in your wedding clothes. You get dressed up again, maybe the day after your wedding or maybe weeks later, and we do a photo shoot at the location of your choice. Some people call it "trash the dress" but I don't like to say that. We don't trash anything, it's just that we don't have to be as careful about the hem of the dress getting dirty while we're running around.

Joyce and James at Stonepine Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Here's a gorgeous location Carmel Valley I didn't know about before: Stonepine. It's a very majestic old mansion on the end of a long windy road. Joyce and James had a small elegant wedding with just a dinner. They planned the whole thing long distance and it came out just perfect (thanks to their fabulous vendors)!

Here's a great ceremony shot by my assistant Heather Powell.

John & Audrey Sedona, AZ Thursday, January 28, 2010

Blue Moon, New Year's Eve, New Decade, New Baby, 10 years together. Everything lined up for John and Audrey to get married that day.

John and Audrey got married at a very special place-- the Verde Valley School in Sedona, AZ. Audrey writes, "The school was founded by my grandparents in 1946, on intercultural understanding and global citizenship (and environmental stewardship). It was radical idea in its time." I noticed that both families have a real commitment to building communities and honoring children. That must be why Audrey and John both grew up to be such wonderful people. They also just adopted their first child, Tahrique, from Ethiopia. Every time I looked at Tahrique, she was laughing.

This wedding had a lot of DIY aspects. Aside from the Oscar de la Renta dress and my photography, I think Audrey and John basically did everything themselves! From the pinecone boutonnieres to the white arches with floating hearts (I loved those), they worked at every little detail. The table linens and napkins were brought in from Vietnam (where Audrey's parents lived). Everything was as eco-friendly and reusable as they could make it.

Oh and did I mention that their dog Brodi (some kind of poodle shnoodle mix-- he's a rescue) was a perfect little teddy bear? Doesn't he look handsome in his tie?

And I hope Audrey doesn't mind me cutting and pasting from her recent e-mail to me:
"I was so thrilled by the stop-motion movie I couldn't sleep until well after 1am the night I saw it. Thanks again for your creativity."

I often photograph the couple before the ceremony. I start by taking photos of the bride alone, and then my assistant cues the groom to enter the room. I love the sense of anticipation on Audrey's face juxtaposed with her grandmother's portrait on the wall.

Audrey + John New Year's Eve movie! Monday, January 18, 2010

Right when the clock struck midnight, the Brazilian dancers came out. Audrey and John danced on the stage with them.

I love her dress by Oscar de la Renta.
